Having a mental illness and being a drama queen are not mutually exclusive. As tumblr highlights oh so clearly, you can be genuinely fucked up and a legitimate annoyance to the rest of the world. I refuse to allow ridiculous behaviors to slide under the guise of mental illness. You can be sick and…

I almost agreed with you, until I hit the end.  Being sick, whether it be physically or mentally, is no excuse to treat others like shit.  Granted, a little leeway has to be given- sometimes people genuinely cannot deal with things and are not trying to take it out on others.  But yes, people who are sick can be assholes too.  But then I got to this: “Let’s devote our attention to helping those who are fighting to live first…then, maybe, the ones so eager to die.”

Really?

You can’t say “Hey, I’m sorry you’re sick, but you’re not important, I’m going to let you die.”

If you think that’s okay, then you don’t understand anything about this topic, and should kindly shut your mouth.

Reblogging for Jacqui’s commentary. OP, don’t be a hypocrite.

Fuck all.  Sorry it took too long to respond.  I actually didn’t know how to go back and add commentary to my post :/.  I’m not a hypocrite.  I’m definitely not unaware of the “topic.”  I’m also not going to get defensive, because I’m firm in my belief.  It’s not a matter of not caring for those who aren’t trying to help themselves, it’s a matter of bitter realism at the end of the day.  And we are splitting my post into two issues, so lets separate.  We agree that sick people can be assholes so it’s moot.  As for the second part, well, as I said I don’t feel a need to spill my life story in defense of something I think is obvious.  I liken my post to the “take your air first, then help those around you” idea on a plane.  It’s sad that so many people are sick, depressed, suicidal, etc.  I’ve been living in that world for over a decade.  I’ve lost friends, I’ve lost myself and been brought back grudgingly.  The fact is, at the end of the day you can only help those who want to help themselves.  I’ve been guilty of saying “let me die”…and I’ve been in so many positions to gain different perspectives on this matter deeply that I absolutely chuckle when I’m accused of knowing nothing on the matter.  Not everyone can be saved.  And even despite all that I’ve been through (again, I know that it validates my opinion, so I don’t feel compelled to share) I know that people that could have been saved are potentially being lost because of a disproportionate amount of attention is being misplaced.  I’m sorry it ruffles feathers…but I’m not sorry for being a realist.

There are many who want to fight and get better, but simply do not have the capacity to do so. And you’re implying that we should give up on them. That isn’t okay. They need that extra boost more than ever. And those who say they don’t want to fight and just want to die, they still deserve the knowledge that someone out there cares for them and wants them to fight.

What Emma said.  When someone wants to die, one person can make all the difference.  People who are suicidal aren’t beyond help.  I understand how it may seem like “Oh, they don’t want help, why should I try?” And I understand that at some point, you cannot help  the person if they refuse to help themselves.  But that does not mean giving up on people with mental illnesses in favor of treating people with physical ones is okay.
